Xylitol Nasal Spray-Home Made

7)Xylitol nasal spray is as good for nasal/sinus congestion. Xylitol nasal spray is expensive if purchased online, but it can be home prepared for a lower cost.

To make the nasal spray, you need to mix 1 cup of water, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tbs. of xylitol crystals, 4 drops of grapefruit seed extract and a pinch of ordinary household baking soda. The water should be warm, and you should mix the ingredients until they are completely dissolved. Xylitol crystals and grapefruit seed extract are available to order from multiple online sources, or can be purchased at your local natural/health foods store.

To use the preparation, pour into nasal spray bottle and spray two sprays into each nostril as needed.

Nasal Irrigation

8)Nasal irrigation is one of the most effective and commonly applied home remedies used to treat sinusitis congestion due to thick hardened mucus blockage. However, it has to be cautioned that any prolonged daily continuously using of this method could up your strikes with sinus congestion and infection because of the frequent flushing which invariably drains away both the "good" mucus possessing those antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties and "bad" mucus which is infected with bactoria and fungal organism. In the end, the nasal and sinus membrances may be hurt and cease to produce those good mucus that provide natural healing by our body.

For short term use and instant relief, nasal irrigation can be prepared as follows:-

To do nasal irrigation, you will need a container and saline solution. You can buy prefilled containers, or opt for a bulb syringe or neti pot. All are available at drugstores. Some people cup their hands and sniff the saline solution into their nostril, though that may be harder to do for a beginner. If you choose a prefilled bottle, skip this step. Otherwise, you can buy a saline solution powder and follow the directions on the label or make your own. Start with one to two cups of warm (not hot) tap water. Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of non-iodized salt and a pinch of baking soda to soften the effect of the salt. Adjust the concentration of saline solution to suit you. If you are using a squeeze bottle, neti pot, or bulb syringe, lean forward over the sink, at about a 45-degree angle. Tilt your head so that one nostril is pointed down toward the sink. Don't tilt your head back. Place the spout of a neti pot or the tip of a syringe or squeeze bottle just inside your nose. The tip should go in no further than a finger’s width. Keeping your mouth open, squeeze the bulb syringe or bottle, or tilt the pot to pour the water into your nostril. Remember to breathe through your mouth, not your nose. The salt water will run through your nasal passages and drain out of your other nostril and maybe your mouth. You should spit it out and not swallow it. But if some does go down your throat it won't hurt you.

Repeat by gently blow your nose to clear out the remaining solution. Do again the procedure with your other nostril. After you have finished, be sure you discard any remaining solution and thoroughly clean the items you have used. Store them in a clean dry place to use again.

As a special remark, grapefruit seed extract can be added 2-5 drops into the saline solution to increase the effectiveness.

9)Cool Mist Humidifier

is a good option for helping to cure sinus pain due to clogging of nasal passages when the mucuos membrance gets inflamed and swollen due to dry air. It functions to moist the air so that your sinus is not stressed and swollen. With good moisture, the cilia can perform well to drain the mucus to avoid blocking of the nasal passages.

It has been a good idea to put a bedside humidifier , near your head which is an effective way to add moisture to the air and reduce congestion and sinus pressure. It is highly recommended to add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, peppermint or menthol extracts to promote healing and further soothing .

However, a word of caution when choosing a humidifier so that it is antimicrobial, quiet in operation and easily cleansed to avoid mold or fungal and bacterial growth.

To enhance effectiveness in the application of home remedies for nasal congestion is to avoid diets with nuts, dairy products, milk , wheat glutens, and all those foods that initiate nasal congestion as they promote building up of mucus. This adversely slows down the healing process.
In fact, as part of diet, it is best to hydrate ourselves with more than 10 glasses of water a day in thinning the mucus and flushing out toxins from our bodies.

Instead, fresh fruits rich in vitamin A and C are highly recommended in our diets to keep away the sinus problem. Instances of fruits like mangoes are one of the best ingredients of home remedies for sinusitis. This contains high amount of vitamin A which helps in creation of strong epithelium which prevents sinus to a great extent.
